Cloth doll making has magic to it: a flat piece of cloth that comes to life in a variety of characterizations—some are collectible art dolls that represent a character we admire, or a person we love, and some are kid-friendly (for ages 8 and above) made to be loved.
The fun of cloth doll making is the many mediums available to the artist: sewing, designing, painting, sculpting, costuming, embellishment, and more—always pushing the edge to become a better artist, or to find a new or better way to improve the craft.
We research all of our character dolls (such as Annie Oakley, Buffalo Bill, Sitting Bull Doll, White Buffalo Calf Woman, etc.) to try to capture the essence of that persona. Same is true of dolls that are designed with one person in mind, that either contain pieces of fabric, or a hank of hair, or an old family treasure that evokes a memory or tells a story that make it a treasured heirloom. All of our dolls are individually hand crafted, American made, and one-of-a-kind (OOAK).
So much of doll art is about story, and so it is with our doll shoppe, so please check in regularly as our story unfolds. And perhaps you’ll see something you like, and want us to make a character doll, or a personal doll, or a teddy bear for you or someone you love.
Traditional dolls are sometimes used as children’s playthings, but they may also have spiritual, magical and ritual value. There is no defined line between spiritual dolls and toys. In some cultures dolls that had been used in rituals were given to children. They were also used in children’s education and as carriers of cultural heritage. In our culture they are often prized by adults and children alike. And let’s face it, the things that make our children happy make us happy…
